What is Christmas to you?
Is it the gifts?
Everyone loves having their gifts. Kids looking forward to seeing what Santa has brought them. But is it really about the gifts? Or do we just love the thought of opening something with our name on it?
Is it about spending time with family and/or friends?
If Christmas is not about the gifts? Is it because we are with those who we care deeply about? Perhaps just opening something in front of that person and seeing their faces as we appreciate (sometimes pretend) their gifts is what matters.
In today’s world, it is rare for a family to sit together during dinner and Christmas gives us that opportunity. Most family would push away their differences for one special day and enjoy those around them (as long as politics is never brought up as a rule of thumb). Thanks to technology, we can call/Zoom/Facetime family worldwide and wish them Merry Christmas or whatever religion we or they follow. In addition, we keep in touch or get a quick update with those we don’t speak much with during the year. Perhaps it is the one chance we get to talk to those we basically either ignore or are just too busy with to interact with daily.
Is that Christmas? A reason to communicate to those we can’t due to our busy lives.
Is it solitude?
Not everyone has family or friends to go to. Then, there are those who take the chance to separate from the world to have a chance to dwell on the past and wonder about their future.
Is it tradition? A religious schedule you have always followed.
Or do you celebrate Christmas because it is tradition?!
Nothing wrong with following what has always been done. It is part of you, of your past, and your future.
Or, is it about Saint Nick?
Or do you celebrate because the great Saint Nick, who I found out from watching a British show, is literally everywhere thanks to a pirate who broke him (or his bones)?
Saint Nick, a Roman in Turkey, who gave out gifts to children and started a holiday we follow many centuries later.
WHAT IS CHRISTMAS?
We once more comeback to what is Christmas?
To me, Christmas is chance to be with family, have some traditions, and celebrating the end of a year. I am not big on gifts. Gifts are a plus, I will be honest about, but it isn’t Christmas. Christmas is being with those you love and care about, or at least having them in mind. It is a recognizing there is a new year coming and hoping for the best the following year that follows.
Remember that for today, for this Christmas day:
1. Be kind to others even when they are not.
2. Be humble.
3. Be willing to talk & …
4. Don’t forget, even though sometimes things seem horrible, that life seems to want to kick your ass from one of earth’s poles to the next, it is not the end because when one thing finishes, something else starts up again, just have to be willing to move with the flow and accept the changes happening around you.
